A Second Life for ACP 9 Paper Placemats (ATL)

Our APC 9 Public Art project “Paper Placemats (ATL)” were found on the tables at Mill Springs Academy, a school for special needs children in Alpharetta. Mill Springs had their annual Family dinner and Arts Auction, and the ACP placemats were a part of the festivities. Mill Springs Parent and Association Treasurer Sharon Davis said, “I can’t tell you many people commented on the placemats, reading the backs for the photographer information, asking questions, etc. I was more than happy to point out to everyone that these mats were generously donated by Atlanta Celebrates Photography for use by our school.”

We’re glad we could take part. Thanks, Mill Springs!

Marilyn Suriani’s Vintage Views

Berkeley Lake photographer Marilyn Suriani, a participating artist in ACP 9, mentioned to me a few months ago that she had vintage photographs she’d shot in Atlanta in the 70s & 80s. I’m always interested in seeing how things used to look, so she sent over a disc with some scans.

Her photographs show an Atlanta that’s just about gone, or if not gone, has at least lost some luster. I haven’t wandered into a place yet and seen these three gentleman, at least.

Most of the photos can be seen on Marilyn’s site (on her site, click the “Photography” menu at the upper-right), including views inside strip clubs (where Marilyn worked as a waitress), storefront churches (these aren’t vintage - early 90s), and Marilyn also has a wide selection of street scenes & portraits from Little 5 Points in the late 70s and early 80s.

Bruce Davidson Interview and Artist’s Talk

Magnum photographer Bruce Davidson was in Atlanta over the weekend for the opening of his “Time of Change” exhibition at Jackson Fine Art. ACP was able to spend a few minutes with Mr. Davidson before his artist’s talk, and we were able to record an audio interview.

Bruce’s artist’s talk was exceptional. There were many SCAD students in attendance, and everyone seem to come away with a renewed sense of both Mr. Davidson and his life’s work.

Doug Sturgess @ the Showcase School

Doug Sturgess has an exhibit called “Ocean Earth” at the Showcase School through June 12th. There’s a public reception this Thursday, May 15th from 6:30-8pm. Doug’s underwater pictures have been gracing the walls here for the last few weeks; he’s a former student of the Showcase School, and it’s great to see a photographer make the leap from the classroom to the gallery! Blurb’s Photobook Contest

Blurb’s been working-out-the-kinks of their print-on-demand service in the last few years. I saw a few stellar examples during our ACP 9 Portfolio Review from photographers who’d turned to Blurb to put their work into book form. Blurb’s sponsoring a photobook contest with a $25,000 award (!), and the deadline is July 14th. Darius Himes is the head judge of a distinguished panel. More info on the Blurb site.

Jay Maisel Lecture, Thursday, May 7th

The American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) is hosting a benefit lecture from photographer Jay Maisel tomorrow night, May 7th, at 6:30pm. The lecture’s at the Center for Design Study on 400 Trabert [map], and according to AIGA’s site, admission is $20, with proceeds benefiting the Center.

Sheila Pree Bright’s “Young Americans” at the High Museum of Art

Sheila Pree Bright’s exhibition “Young Americans” (detailed here) opened this weekend at the High Museum. On Friday, there was a media walkthrough, where Julian Cox (Head Curator of Photography) and Sheila spoke about the work.
