Lumiere Gallery has an exhibition called “Southern Exposures” this summer featuring four Southern photographers; Thomas Neff, Tim Barnwell, Lucinda Bunnen, and Mark Maio. The opening is on Thursday, June 26th, from 6:30-8:30. And there will be an artist’s talk from Thomas Neff on June 28th, at 10am, and lectures from the other three, as well, in mid-summer.
Next weekend, June 28th & 29th, the High Museum will have two more complimentary programs to their “Road to Freedom” exhibit. Here are the details:

Saturday, June 28, 2 p.m., Rich Theatre
Join Civil Rights heroes including Congressman John Lewis, Ambassador Andrew Young, activist Dorothy Cotton, introduced by High Curator Julian Cox for an afternoon of remembrances and dialogue around the contributions of the courageous champions of justice who struggled to make equality a reality for all. The panelists will reflect on their experiences in the Civil Rights movement in light of the High’s current exhibition “Road to Freedom: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement, 1956-1968.” The discussion will be moderated by Alexis Scott, journalist and publisher of the “Atlanta Daily World,” the city’s first black-owned daily newspaper. This program is free and seating is limited. Tickets are available through the Woodruff Arts Center Box Office at 404-733-5000 and online at www.high.org. Tickets to the Museum are sold separately.
FILM AND DISCUSSION: “Voices of Freedom”
Sunday, June 29, 3 p.m., Hill Auditorium
America’s civil rights movement found its strength in the people who took to the streets to support it. “Voices of Freedom” re-visits several key events and places shaped by America’s great nonviolent revolution. This 20 minute video was filmed, edited, and produced by award-winning documentary filmmaker, Neal Broffman, son of the late Morton Broffman whose photographs are included in the exhibition “Road to Freedom.” The film will be followed by a discussion with Julian Cox, curator of “Road to Freedom: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement, 1956 – 1968,” and a Q&A. Free with Museum admission and free to Members.

In Coan Park, in Edgewood, Matt Haffner gave a great talk yesterday about his latest piece, which is part of the “A (new) Genre Landscape” public art exhibition in Atlanta-area parks this summer.
Carl Martin, an Athens-based photographer, will be presenting work from the last 20 years at Opal Gallery this Friday night. The exhibition will run through August 2nd, and there will be an artist talk on Friday evening, as well.

This Friday marks the opening of Lori Waselchuk’s “Grace Before Dying” at Kiang Gallery, and Ms. Waselchuk will be giving an Artist Talk this Saturday, June 14th, at noon. The project “explore(s) the last days of terminally ill prisoners and the remarkably humane care given by prison volunteers”, and was completed at Angola State Prison, in Louisiana.

Spruill Arts Gallery is having an artist’s lecture this Thursday, June 12th, at 7pm. There’ll be a performance by Dick Robinson and talks by Tristan Al-Haddad, Danielle Roney, Kathryn Refi and Philip Galanter. (via localephemera)
There’s an opening for Hadley Breckenridge’s exhibition “Pace” tonight, which photographically examines her relationship to public transportation here in Atlanta, at the “Arts for All” gallery, at 57 Forsyth. Her show is up until June 20th. Please see more information here.
Road to Freedom (Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement 1956-1968), a fantastic exhibition which dovetails with After 1968, opens Saturday, June 7th, at the High Museum. Next week, we’ll post two audio interviews with photographers included in the show. Photographers in the exhibition include Bob Adelman, Morton Broffman, Bruce Davidson, Doris Derby, Larry Fink, James Karales, Builder Levy, Danny Lyon and Steve Schapiro.

There’s a citywide public art project that’s been in the works for this summer. The reception for the project is this Saturday, at the Cyclorama. Click the image for more info. This Friday, May 30th, at 6:30, ACP 9 Portfolio Reviewee Stephanie Dowda will be giving an artist’s talk about her inaugural exhibition at the brand new Hagedorn Foundation Gallery, a “non-profit gallery supporting Atlanta charities.”
ACP has a film series, curated by Andy Ditzler, and we’re passionate about anything made with a lens (and photograms, too!). Solomon Projects are planning a photography exhibition for ACP 10, and they currently have a video installation from Janet Biggs. The show, “Tracking Up” will be on view until June 21st. Can’t wait to get over there to take a look!

* SCAD graduate photography students are having a show this Thursday, May 22nd. It’s called “Process: Photography”, and the opening is from 7-9pm @ SCAD-Atlanta, 5th floor, Building C.
* The “PhotoAwesome” folks from SCAD are having a public reception for their show on Saturday night, May 24th, at Blue Tower Gallery behind 675 Metropolitan Parkway from 7-10pm.
* ACP 9 Portfolio Review participants Ed Panar & Melissa Catanese had work up this weekend at the MoCP Satellite Show at the New York Photography Festival. Plus, Ellen Susan, who also participated in the ACP 9 Portfolio Review, has had work chosen for Exposure 2008. Congrats, all!
Our APC 9 Public Art project “Paper Placemats (ATL)” were found on the tables at Mill Springs Academy, a school for special needs children in Alpharetta. Mill Springs had their annual Family dinner and Arts Auction, and the ACP placemats were a part of the festivities. Mill Springs Parent and Association Treasurer Sharon Davis said, “I can’t tell you how many people commented on the placemats, reading the backs for the photographer information, asking questions, etc. I was more than happy to point out to everyone that these mats were generously donated by Atlanta Celebrates Photography for use by our school.”

Doug Sturgess has an exhibit called “Ocean Earth” at the Showcase School through June 12th. There’s a public reception this Thursday, May 15th from 6:30-8pm. Doug’s underwater pictures have been gracing the walls here for the last few weeks; he’s a former student of the Showcase School, and it’s great to see a photographer make the leap from the classroom to the gallery! The American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) is hosting a benefit lecture from photographer Jay Maisel tomorrow night, May 7th, at 6:30pm. The lecture’s at the Center for Design Study on 400 Trabert [map], and according to AIGA’s site, admission is $20, with proceeds benefiting the Center.

Organized by Lee Jones and curated by Stephanie Dowda and Connie Lewis, “Ka-Chunk: an Exhibition of Medium Format Photography” is the latest photo show at The Opal Gallery in Little Five Points. The show will be up through May 17th; here’s how things looked opening night.
The Atlanta Photography Group (APG) is having an opening this Friday for a show called “In Your Dreams” that will run through June 20th. The selection has been juried by Naomi Silva, and the photographers include Anne Berry, Bob Burkhardt, Nicolas Dantona, Allison Evans, Ellen Jantzen, Jan Kapoor, Susan Lirakis, Ted Maloof, Ann E. Moller, Gittel Price, Brett Ryabik & David Swann. Also showing is Paul Conlan’s “Urban Landscapes” work.
