Submit Your Proposal for ACP Public Art 2012: Deadline is Feb. 12th

This Week With ACP

Zoe Strauss. Tim Archibald. YouTube Play finalists. It’s the last week in October, and ACP has planned two great lectures this week, plus a screening of our ACP Public Art project in Grant Park, alongside finalists in the Guggenheim’s “YouTube Play” biennial of creative video.

Philadelphia-based photographer Zoe Strauss will be speaking at Atlanta Contemporary Art Center on Thursday night at 7pm. Strauss is a photo-based installation artist who uses Philadelphia as a primary setting and subject for her work. Strauss’s photographic work has included a yearly “Under I-95″ show, which took place (for ten years) beneath the Interstate highway in South Philadelphia, where she displayed her photographs on concrete pillars under the highway. In 2006, her work was included in the Whitney Biennial. Zoe Strauss was named a 2007 USA Gund Fellow and granted $50,000 by United States Artists. Zoe Strauss is the author of America, published in November 2008 by AMMO Books.

San Francisco-based photographer Tim Archibald will be speaking on Friday night at Emory University School of Medicine. Archibald’s work includes ECHOLILIA, a collaboration with his son, Eli. Together, father and son orchestrate a portrait series that depicts dreamy, intimate images not only of Eli, but of childhood itself, riddled as it is with mystery and fantasy. In doing so, Archibald documents the burgeoning of a newly charted relationship with his son. Through their creative collaboration, empowerment came to both Timothy and Eli. Timothy found a way to dial-in to Eli’s different channel, thereby breaching the previously challenging obstacle posed by his son’s autistic proclivities. And Eli found a powerful mirror both of his robust, imaginative childhood and his renewed bond with his dad.

Saturday night in Grant Park, ACP is collaborating with i45 in a public screening of the finalists from the Guggenheim’s “YouTube Play” biennial. Plus, ACP’s Public Art project “Volley”, from Monica Cook, will make its final screening of the Festival.

We’ve been waiting all year for this week of the Festival! On Thursday night, Chip Simone will be in conversation with Brett Abbott (Curator of Photography at the High Museum) at our “Spotlight on Local Talent” event. Friday night brings an exciting “two-fer” to The Goat Farm; a screening of our ACP Public Art project; Monica Cook’s Volley, which will be playing a short walk away from the ACP Film Series.

Named “Still Motion”, the ACP Film Series is a selection of ten videos, curated from an open call for submissions for excellent videos made with still cameras. From iPhones to HD-SLRs, the judges (Blake Williams of Proper Medium, Andy Ditzler of Frequent Small Meals, and ACP) selected a diverse group of videos from around-the-world for Friday’s screening, and one lucky winner will receive a grand prize of $250!

Saturday morning brings the ACP Photobook Fair, now in its third year! Participating photographers and artists will have tables where you may browse their photobooks, plus Larissa Leclair from Indie Photobook Library will be in attendance, along with Fall Line Press and Shock Design. We hope you can swing by Piedmont Park (starts early, at 9am!) and see some of the fantastic, limited-edition publications that are being made today, plus, you get to see this year’s My Atlanta exhibition!

Please find more detailed information in the ACP 2011 Festival Guide, the downloadable PDF, and in the printed guide available at participating venues and locations around the city.

This week brings a wide-range of photo opportunities across the Metro Atlanta area, from a lecture about daguerreotypes at the High Museum to the 2nd Annual ACP Photo Book Fair at Piedmont Park.

Rosenheim will discuss the history of the Metropolitan’s collection of photographs, the value of artist’s archives, and what he believes is the evolving role of the camera in American society.

One of our newest programs, the ACP Photo Book Fair will take place on Saturday at the Piedmont Park Community Center. Hosted alongside My Atlanta, the Photo Book Fair is open to artists who’ve published books (on their own, or with publishers) to show, discuss, and sell their books to the public. A special presentation on self-publishing by myphotopipe.com about their “Real Life” photo books will take place at 11am. Coupons and special offers will be distributed at the event.

It’s a big week for ACP, as openings, events, lectures and workshops are kicking this year’s festival into high gear! We’re pleased to be collaborating with Lumière in their presentation of Dorothea Lange and Her Impact: a Film Screening and Panel Discussion at the High Museum on Thursday, at 7pm. The lecture is followed by Lumière’s exhibition of Lange’s work, opening this Friday.

It’s great to see all the new participating venues involved this year, as well as old favorites. This week brings a great, diverse selection, from Perry Julien’s opening in Midtown at Apres Diem, to the Westside where Saltworks & Get This! Gallery have openings on Friday, and this weekend brings the first events of SlowExposures, including the world’s first group show of photographs taken by dogs!

Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you out and about!
