ACP’s “Teen Spirit” Exhibition

October 19th, 2016
We have a pop-up exhibition this year for "Teen Spirit" - photographs and writing from the patients at Egleston and Children's Health Care of Atlanta. Recently, Maura Friedman from Creative Loafing wrote this great piece about the program: "Looks like Teen Spirit."

"One cancer patient in a recent workshop was particularly nervous. Her bald head made her self-conscious about modeling. Demetrius coached her gently, taking photos of her hands and the details of her socks until she relaxed to take a more traditional portrait.

It's that personal empowerment that gives the whole project meaning to Adams.

'I'm at an age where if I have another photography show it's not going to change the world,' Adams, a 25-year fine art photography veteran, says. 'I want to do something that really takes photography into the world in a meaningful way and has impact and relationship involved in it.'"
The exhibition will be in the lobby at the Stephen Shore / Instagram panel discussion on Saturday, but it will not be on view at Mason Fine Art, per the box below. That's 2015's information, and it's incorrect.

Big thanks to Digital Arts Studio for creating these two panels that tell the stories of the kids who participate in this program. Thank you!

ACP Special Exhibition – A Quick Look and Review from

November 6th, 2012
We're pleased to share with you Cathy Fox's review of our Special Exhibition currently on view at the High Museum of Art: "Exhibit of photographic self-portraits by chronically ill kids, 'Teen Spirit' will raise yours". The project opened last week and will be open through Nov. 10th.
"This volunteer project, the brainchild of Atlanta Celebrates Photography board member Bill Boling and director Amy Miller, was a team effort. Photographer Corinne Adams and a cadre of peers — Judy Lampert, Mary Fisher, Julia Sawyer, Laura Noel, Indy Cesare (the lone speech therapist) — worked at Scottish Rite and Egleston hospitals, aided by the hospitals’ devoted Child Life Activity specialists. They set up mini-photo studios with equipment donated to both hospitals by the Atlanta law firm, Morris, Manning & Martin, purchased at cost courtesy of Showcase Photo and Video. Adams and her team began by discussing the concept of portraiture with the teens. What you can know about a person from a portrait? How you can say something about yourself? Does it have to be a face? Why not your little finger? Then they helped the teens generate their own compositions and take each other’s pictures. Adams is awed by their creativity and character. “I wasn’t expecting profundity,” she says. “I leave every session with my heart pounding in my chest. This is what photography’s all about.”

ACP Special Exhibition from Jan Banning

October 18th, 2012
ACP Special Exhibition - Jan Banning

A reminder of ACP's Special Exhibition from Dutch photographer Jan Banning tonight at 6:30pm at Big House Gallery in Castleberry. Banning, whose cope includes a global look at power, governments, and the effects of war, has recently been photographing in the US to produce a documentary project on the Southeast's homeless population. Utilizing a time-honored portrait style that recalls 17th-century Dutch painting, Banning's portraits reveal the homeless not for what they lack, but for who they are.

We'll also be celebrating the billboard installation of the ACP Public Art project from Larson/Shindelman tonight at Big House Gallery, with the artists in attendance!
