“This exhibition seeks to “move the crowd”, by establishing a photographic and artistic parallel between DJs and traditional and modern-day ministers/spiritual leaders to explore a deeper connection; further examining the distinct role of the deejay and emphasizing their historical significance. DJs are the captains, taking its passengers on an adventure; ministering through music, preaching from their respective “pulpits”, and empowering and inspiring the loyal congregations that support them, hence its title “Ministers Of Sound”. -Honoring the legacy of Rev. Hardy S. Bennings, Jr.”
Atlanta, GA (January 30, 2013) – On Sunday, February 24, 2013, Evolve! Artists Live, Inc., will present the highly anticipated unveiling of “Ministers Of Sound”, a photography exhibition held at The Sound Table. This exhibition will initiate a creative installation of art fusion that celebrates and identifies with DJs and DJ culture. The installation features a photographic art exhibition intended to inspire the Atlanta community by integrating a creative parallel and contrast, further examining the role of the “deejay”, hence its title, Ministers Of Sound.
“Ministers Of Sound” is the vision of Kemi Bennings, curator of the exhibit and Founder of Evolve! Artists Live, Inc. The concept for this exhibition is in remembrance of her late father, Rev. Hardy S. Bennings, Jr.; who was a minister and beloved community leader. Her deep connection with her father, catapulted the development of an art project that would also serve as her healing process through what she considers her ministry, the arts. “I envisioned a community project that would move, touch and inspire others; salute a group of unsung heroes, while at the same time pay tribute to my late father”, states Bennings. The unsung heroes Bennings chose to incorporate are the DJs in the community that have impacted the lives of so many people for over a decade. To help bring this vision to life, Bennings collaborated with music and entertainment photographer, Annette Brown. Together, they embarked on a journey to capture the DJ culture in culmination with the spiritual connection the culture has with music.
Historically, DJs have been the gateways to new horizons in art form, music genre and popular music. They are considered conductors in the industry as well as the musical engines that package and transport evolutions of sound throughout the globe. In parallel to a spiritual leader or preacher, DJs are ministers in music; preaching from their respective “pulpits”; empowering and inspiring the loyal congregations that support them. The exhibition depicts the parallel and contrast through wardrobe, photographic eye and according to the DJ’s personal spiritual belief system.
“Ministers Of Sound” features an array of prominent DJs including: DJ Kemit, DJ Ramon Rawsoul (House In The Park), DJ Salah Ananse, DJ Karl Injex, DJ Sky, DJ Tabone, DJ Osmose, DJ Apple Jac, DJ Ghost, DJ Cha Cha Jones, DJ Ron Pullman, DJ Kai Alce, DJ Kevin O, DJ Lord (Public Enemy), DJ Rasta Root, DJ Mafioso, DJ Jamad, DJ Mike Zarin and many others from various genres from Afro Beat to Electronic music. There will be a media preview from 4 – 5pm, with the public view following at 5pm. Attendees will be “baptized” by the sounds of various DJs spinning throughout the evening, along with the “Ministers Of Sound” video presentation.
